Giving Back: It Just Feels Good

Life as a solopreneur can often be, well, somewhat solo. If you’re anything like me, you spend most of your time in your office (or sometimes, working from the couch or backyard). And maybe from time to time you remember to visit with friends or colleagues for a business lunch or personal lunch.

But do you remember to take time to give back?

RAMI’m not talking the pink spoon, free giveaway. Or even the occasional free preview call. I’m talking about getting out and about in the community and getting involved.

This past week here in Los Angeles, we were lucky enough to have the Remote Area Medical (RAM) team to devote a full week to giving away free medical, dental, vision and alternative treatments. My husband and I worked two shifts during the event.

I have to say, it was one of the most amazing things I’ve done recently. The event itself was beyond incredible. To see the buses and trucks inside being used as mobile surgical units, the rows and rows of dental chairs, the many volunteers, well, it was just inspiring. To receive the heartfelt thanks from the many hundreds of individuals receiving treatment, that was humbling.

I’m sure many of us can remember our leaner days (for me, it was during grad school) and going without or putting off medical treatment or even just the check ups or cleanings. In the midst of all this crazy recession talk and all the arguments around health care, it was a good feeling knowing so many could come together and our part to help others get the help they needed.

Not only does giving back help to improve the community that you’re a part of, but it also helps you to get those creative juices flowing. It forces you to look at life differently. And well, I’ll say it, it’s just good karma so don’t be surprised at all that will come your way.

I challenge you to get out of your solopreneur world and get out in your community and give back. You won’t be sorry.

Yes I also agree to what you have to say on the matter. Till a certain age you will happy about your solo doings but you will need to get out of it one day.
