“Okay. Even though you’re here, I’m not impressed. You’re just my monster. Even though I’m terrified of you, it’s not the end of the world that you exist, alright?”
It really isn’t the end of the world that we each have our own monsters. I mean yeah, they’re scary. And yeah, they pop up at the most annoying of times. Monsters thrive on fear (yes, the F word strikes again), they get off on ruining your day. As Havi, the destuckification expert over at the Fluent Self puts it, fear “makes them feel like they are doing their job and it is not very fun for you.”
So the goal here is to find out just what your monsters needs.
Ask it. Face that fear head on. Have a conversation with it. And in the mean time, be sure to let your monster know what you need from him (or her – Havi suggests you ask). Like all conversation, it’s a two-way street and well, someone’s got to be the adult here.
For other great suggestions for feeding and caring for your monster, be sure to check out Havi’s post, Not All Monsters Like Cookies. Very useful stuff, especially if you’re the type (ahem…not to point fingers) that seems to let fear or your monster take the wheel.
The twitterized version…
Not all monsters like cookies. Ask first. Your monster will calm down when it gets what it needs. Communication is good.
