Questions to Help Discover Your Niche

I’m sure you’ve heard it said before (heck, I’ve said it before), the niche is the bitch.  But often we ask ourselves, why do I need a niche?  To put it simply, it’s impossible to be everything to everyone.  Having a niche is a way to access a targeted, more focused, smaller segment of the market.

Just like earlier when I asked if you knew who your target audience is, knowing your niche just makes it easier to run your business.  Identifying and knowing both your target audience and your niche means you’ll know how to market your business, products and services.  You’ll know specifically which products and services your clients or customers need.

To help you to discover your niche Scott Ginsberg, aka “The Nametag Guy,” came up with 17 questions to help you to narrow down the market.  To get started, ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • When thinking about your business offerings, ask yourself, where’s the hole?  What’s missing? What’s being ignored?
  • What new service or product can my expertise create?  What do I know, inside and out, better than others in a similar market?
  • What question does everyone ask? What question does everyone wonder about but leave unasked?  What solution can I offer to this problem?
  • How can I do it differently?  More quickly?  With better, more efficient and effective results?

Once you design your products, your services, your business around both your niche and your target audience (they go hand in hand), you’re able to better help them to fulfill their needs.  In the end, it becomes win/win for all involved.

What do you want to know about your future clients and customers?
